#RoadToCoachella - my highlights throughout the years.
overall highlights = this coachella was kind of a blur because it was my first and i didn't know a lot of people and i had only been programming XMU for xm satellite radio for a year. i went alone and stayed with some people that i barely knew and i remember we hitch hiked back to the place we were staying. it was only the third year of the festival and therefore only one weekend and two days - and while there were a lot of people, it was still really chill and the VIP/media area was a vast oasis of awesome! i had never been to the desert, so i was AMAZED at how hot it was in the day and how cold it was at night - i was totally not prepared for such a drastic temperature change and ended up buying a jacket at one of the merch tents - it saved me. this coachella taught me to bring layers and be prepared for any kind of temperature fluctuation during future adventures. one of my favorite memories of this year was hanging out with my friends in zero 7 - henry, sam and sia had recorded an XMU session for me earlier in the year and we totally bonded and were excited to meet up in indio. we had a blast hanging out in the VIP area and they taught me how to roll a proper joint while we watched jurassic 5 - it was epic.
**music highlights = the beta band, zero 7, belle & sebastian, groove armada, the chemical brothers, siouxsie & the banshees, bjork, kosheen, BT, the charlatans, jurassic 5, miguel migs, the stokes, et al.
overall highlights = at this coachella i got an all access artist pass from the super nice founders of the blue man group - they had come into the xm studios in DC and we really hit it off and became friends - so, when i got to indio that year, they totally hooked me up and i got to REALLY experience coachella in style. i had full backstage access and i even go to eat with the bands - it all felt very "almost famous" like to me - but don't worry, i was respectful and didn't eat all the steak ;) this was the year that i kept making the joke i was on a quest to find jack white's package - and while i never really found it - i did get to see the white stripes perform from the side of the stage and i was mesmerized the whole time - ladies, you know what i'm talking about. this was also the year i hung out with my dear friends in the UK band "south" - we ran around back stage and had the best time! oh, this was also the year that i saw fischerspooner in the GOBI tent - to say that this performance was face melting would be a massive understatement. their final song was "emerge" and they played it two times in a row - back to back - and i'm pretty sure everyone in the tent had an out of body experience! also, a lot of people were on drugs - but still, it was radtastic. i also interviewed a ton bands this year: fischerspooner, south, the 20-20s, idlewild, the rapture, the polyphonic spree - but it was the legend that is johnny marr that was the most amazing! "the smiths" are one of my all-time favorite bands and he was also in a band called "the the" that i love - he was impressed that i knew about his involvement with the latter! he is truly one of the nicest and most humble indie legends i've ever had the pleasure to meet/interview - we totally bonded over music and he even insisted that we take a photo together after or chat - needless to say, i was swooning. i love love love johnny marr!
**music highlights = fischerspooner, RJD2, south, blur, badly drawn boy, underworld, beastie boys, the white stripes, johnny marr and the healers, the rapture, groove armada, hot hot heat, interpol, talib kweli, the polyphonic spree, et al.
overall highlights = this was the first year that after parties and gifting suites started happening at music festivals. coachella was still a one weekend/two day event and after saturday's show, there was big party on the side of the polo field sponsored by spin magazine. my friend wes (aka DIPLO) played tunes and was joined by nick zinner of the yeah yeah yeah's as well as the junior boys. we danced and drank until the wee hours of the morn - it was glorious. the party was also sponsored by converse and there was literally an entire barn full of shoes for the taking - i ended up with a pair of high top AND low top chucks as well as a sweet pair of jack purcells. I.WAS.IN.HEAVEN.
**music highlights = radiohead, the cure, air, belle & sebastian, basement jaxx, broken social scene, LCD soundsystem, death cab for cutie, the rapture, the flaming lips, !!!, stereolab, the stills, mark farina, Q and not U, cursive, the crystal method, ash, the sleepy jackson, the thrills, et al. *oh, and the black keys and muse were awesome, but neither were main stage bands yet!
overall highlights = this was the last year that coachella was a one weekend/two day event. i had a lot of fun gathering content for my post-coachella specials on XMU and i got really creative with ways to make the listener feel like they were there with me. this meant that i pretty much recorded stream of concious thoughts during the festival and interspersed this content with interviews and music. at one point during the festival, i was sitting in the VIP area watching snow patrol on the main stage and recording my out loud swooning commentary for the fabulous gary lightbody - all the while i was totally oblivious to the fact that i was sitting right next to danny divito the entire time. (*sidebar: the old school years of coachella were rad because of this very reason - the VIP was still really chill and you could sit next to someone like danny divito without 47 thousand people trying to instagram it. don't get me wrong, i LOVE instagram - i'm just sayin.) this was also the year that i instigated coachella karaoke - which meant that i carried my recording device into the crowd and sang along with friends and indie bands - my favorite from that year was spoon karaoke - and yes, i aired all the coachella karaoke content unedited and mostly (on my part) out of tune - ha. this was one of my favorite years for interviews - as a matter of fact, i was granted the only interview with arcade fire because i was one of the first to support their music on XMU - this was clearly, pre-grammy. i sat with sarah in the grass and chatted while tegan and sara played the side stage - it's fun to hear their music in the background of that interview. another interview highlight for me was sitting in the grass and chatting with the awesomely surly rob crow from pinback - one of my favorite indie pop bands of all time. i felt like a nervous, giddy school girl :) i also sat in the grass and chatted with anthony from M83 - we laughed and talked about zodiac signs - needless to say, i was smitten. other interview highlights included - snow patrol, the doves, jim from spoon, the faint, tegan and sara, british sea power, the sterophonics and midlake.
***and btw, last year was also the first coachella to be instagrammed. with that said, below are some of my instagram highlights! #adayinthelifeofaDJ
